In the Senedd earlier today, Sarah Murphy MS (Lab, Bridgend) asked for an update on the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19 in Bridgend county.
Bridgend was hardest hit by the second wave of the virus, and she got a sense from constituents that restrictions shouldn’t be relaxed too quickly. This was also coming at a time when the vulnerable were only just getting the confidence to go out and about again.
Health Minister, Eluned Morgan (Lab, Mid & West Wales), noted that cases in Bridgend were “comparatively low” compared to other Welsh local authorities.
However, vaccination remains the best means of combating the spread of Covid. Walk-in vaccination services targeting younger people were set up last weekend, though vaccination uptake has been relatively high and there was a clear link between vaccination and a reduction in hospital admissions for Covid.
On a more cautious note, the Minister said Wales wouldn’t be taking the same “liberation day” approach as England. Decisions on easing lockdown restrictions would continue to be based on scientific evidence. Nonetheless, in the longer term we have to be realistic and learn to live with the virus.
