Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr. Stuart Baldwin (Lab, Morfa), recently announced that plans for residents-only parking schemes in several parts of the Newcastle, Oldcastle and Morfa wards of Bridgend will be relaunched.
Previous attempts at residents-only parking schemes in some areas have stalled. This is despite long-standing complaints about drivers working in or visiting the town centre preventing people from parking outside their own homes – which isn’t illegal but can be controlled through parking permits. Previous consultations also resulted in opposition from residents in the affected areas due to an increase in multi-vehicle households as well as possible restrictions on visitors and concerns over disabled parking.
“Having reviewed the situation, I am delighted that we are now in a position where this initiative can move forward once more. The council is currently preparing the plans and materials necessary for the consultation, and residents in each of the zones will soon receive letters updating them on the situation and asking for their views.
“We want the new parking permit scheme to be fit for purpose and to meet the needs of residents, so I hope that every household will take part and ensure that their voices are heard. The scheme will be monitored and evaluated, with a view to rolling it out further if it proves to be successful.”

Four “zones” in Bridgend town centre have been selected for possible residents-only permits. Here they are (with a very roughly drawn boundary):
Zone Two:
Newcastle Hill (including the pedestrianised part at the Angel Street junction), Cae Dre Street, Sunnyside Road.
Zone Four:
Morfa Street, Minerva Street, High View, Acland Road, Charles Street, Vernon Street, Herbert Street.
Zone Six:
Caerwallis Street, Phyllis Avenue, South Street, St. Marie Street, Grove Road.
Zone Eight:
Cheltenham Terrace, South Place, Suffolk Street, Freeschool Court, Jenkin Street.
Consultation with residents is expected to start “very soon” one zone at a time.
Residents-only parking schemes are already used in Australian Terrace and Edward Street in Bridgend town centre, several streets in and around Maesteg town centre, Mackworth Road and Wellfield Road in Porthcawl and The Strand in Blaengarw.
