Bridgend Council’s Planning Committee has granted planning permission for a replacement single-site Mynydd Cynffig Primary in Kenfig Hill (pdf).

The new school will be built on the existing Junior School site at Pwllygath Street and the adjacent Pwllygath allotments. Once open, it will have capacity for 420 pupils in total with a 75-place nursery.

Alongside replacement allotments, a new all-weather sports pitch would be provided.

Work is set to take place in three phases. The first phase will see the new school buildings and new access built. Phase 2 will bring in 26 replacement allotment plots.

The third and final phase will be the demolition of the existing school building, the installation of the sports pitch and further highway improvements – all of which need to be completed within 6 months of the new school being occupied.

Council to review school design guidelines for warmer climate

As ward member, Cllr. Jane Gebbie (Lab, Pyle, Kenfig Hill & Cefn Cribwr) made representations in support of the new school.

Four objections were submitted, mainly from residents in Pwllygath Street who were concerned about the condition of the road and the impact of increased traffic on existing congestion along the street.

Cllr. Simon Griffiths (Lab, Brackla East & Coychurch) raised a broader point about building guidelines for schools in light of climate change, particularly recent heatwaves resulting in school closures.

Cllr. Griffiths suggested measures such as passive shading, also recommending the council reviews its school planning guidance to learn best practices from countries like Greece and Australia. This was accepted as an amendment.

The application was unanimously approved.
