Two community councils have launched public consultations on plans for open spaces in their respective patches.
Draft plans for new Bryntirion Community Park
Laleston Community Council has published draft proposals for a new community park at Bryntirion Playing Fields.
The draft proposals include:
- A splash pool at the north-western corner (next to the community centre car park).
- Newly surfaced footpaths and railings linking all four corners of the fields, along with new benches.
- A memorial garden.
- A foraging garden – which could be used for outdoor teaching.
- A skate park – which would be sunken into an amphitheatre to reduce noise.
- An outdoor gym.
- Various tree and ornamental planting schemes.
- An attenuation pond at the southern half of the fields.
Coity Higher sets out an open space strategy
Coity Higher Community Council has published its draft strategy for the future management of parks and open spaces in Litchard, Coity, Parc Derwen and Pendre (pdf).
The Community Council is currently responsible for seven playgrounds, fields and the Heol West Plas allotments.
They’ve expressed interest in the future Community Asset Transfer of 8 more public open spaces. Some of these are owned by the Parc Derwen developers; some by BCBC.
The Community Council is also seeking an agreement to maintain open space next to the “Black Path” between Wildmill and Sarn.
The core strategy includes:
- Litchard Cross Playing Fields & Community Centre – There are early plans for a new community centre, alongside an additional sports pitch for local clubs.
- Pendre (Great Western Avenue fields & Llys Gwyn) – A lease has already been agreed between the community council and BCBC for a toddler-friendly upgrade to the Llys Gwyn playground. The Community Council has started talks over the community asset transfer of Great Western fields but these have been complicated by land title issues. The vision for the fields is an upgraded football pitch, additional allotment space and a dog walking area.
- Parc Derwen – The intention is for the Community Council to eventually take over the management of Parc Derwen’s playgrounds from Persimmon, as well as the main sports pitch (which has space for three pitches; currently unused). The Community Council rules out taking over control of wooded areas due to the difficulty of maintaining them. Despite this, they hope to maintain a development-free “green buffer” around the edge of Parc Derwen.
- Black Path – The open space (on the opposite side of the river from Glanrhyd Hospital) has “been left to seed”. The Community Council would like to plant wildflowers, add a picnic area and (re)install a football goal.
