Several school projects in the county face delays, with capital funding set aside for the projects set to be pushed back into the 2025-26 financial year (pdf).
Subject to approval at this month’s full council meeting, several changes are being sought to BCBC’s capital spending programme.
The affected projects – all of which are set to be postponed until April 2025 at the earliest – include:
- £3.3million worth of highway improvements related to school modernisation programmes. The delay is due to additional design and commissioning work.
- New Heronsbridge Special School (Island Farm) – Architectural concept work has been completed. The business case has been revised and is awaiting Welsh Government approval.
- New Mynydd Cynffig Primary (Kenfig Hill) – The project has moved to more detailed architectural work. BCBC is awaiting confirmation of the full costs.
- New Ysgol Bro Ogwr (Brackla) – Architectural concept work has finished; still awaiting full cost confirmation.
- New Afon y Felin Primary & Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sger (North Cornelly) – Awaiting full funding confirmation (presumably from the Welsh Government).
Some notable projects set to be added to the 2024-25 capital programme include:
- Flat roof and window replacements at St Mary’s RC Primary.
- £800,000 towards heat pump systems at Bryn-y-Cae care home in Brackla and Bridgend Day Centre.
- Extra funding towards coal tip safety schemes.
- £913,000 in Welsh Government grants to improve services for children with Additional Learning Needs.
- Extra funding to progress a Flying Start centre in Nantymoel. This was originally due to be located at Nantymoel Primary School but has since had to move to an alternative site.
- Sports court refurbishments at Maesteg Welfare Park and Caedu Park (Ogmore Vale).
- Funding to purchase and refurbish BCBC’s recycling vehicle fleet (mentioned earlier).
