Bridgend Council has launched a public consultation on its latest masterplan for the Porthcawl regeneration area.
The proposals include:
- Up to 1,100 homes, split across Salt Lake (450), Coney Beach (200) and Sandy Bay (450). Housing at Salt Lake and Coney Beach would be mainly apartments; Sandy Bay would be mainly standard family homes.
- A new primary school at the Sandy Bay site.
- An extension to Griffin Park alongside a new access road to the Sandy Bay site.
- Further improvements to the Eastern Promenade, including additional public open space and a water feature/splash fountain.
- A new park at Rhych Point (provisionally called “Sandy Bay Gardens”), which would include a mini golf course and BMX track. It looks similar to the Millennium Coastal Park in Llanelli but on a much smaller scale.
- The Hi-Tide, arcade and Hi-Tide car park at Coney Beach would remain, alongside an upgraded boardwalk.
- The creation of a public square near the harbour.
- Flexible space which could be used for motorhomes.
You would be forgiven for getting a sense of deja vu.
Since starting Oggy Bloggy Ogwr in 2011, there have been either three or four different (but very similar) proposals for Salt Lake, Coney Beach and Sandy Bay none of which have come close to being delivered to date (aside from Aldi and the bus station).
The aim is for the first planning applications to be submitted by the end of 2025 and work to start on the first phase before the end of 2026.
